About Media Trust
Media Trust strives to bridge the gap between the media and creative industry and charities, under-represented communities and young people to give them a stronger voice. We do this by promoting skills-based volunteering, empowering young people from diverse and disadvantaged backgrounds to work in the media and creative industry and facilitating capacity building and multi stakeholder dialogue and collaboration.
We’re proud to be helping charities and under-represented communities to challenge entrenched negative stereotypes and fight for more authentic media representation, giving a stronger voice to people with lived experience. We’re helping charities with their communications strategy, advocacy and campaigning, storytelling, content creation, press engagement, and digital and social media.
In 2019, Media Trust supported 2000 charities and 2000 young people and engaged 1300 volunteers through our programmes. We are fortunate to have an extensive network of 40 corporate partners including Amazon, the BBC, BBH, Channel 4, Edelman, Facebook, Google, Guardian Media Group, ITV, Sky, Twitter and Weber Shandwick who we work closely alongside to deliver our programmes.
About the role
This is an exciting and wide-ranging role for an experienced strategic and creative marketing and communications professional. We are looking for someone who has expertise in devising and implementing integrated communications and campaigns strategies to a diverse set of stakeholders. This role would suit someone with understanding and experience of the UK charity sector, and a passion for digital communications and inclusion. We are looking for a strong leader to take Media Trust’s marketing and communications to the next level engaging more charities, communities, young people and the media and creative industry with our work and impact.
You will creatively develop and deliver innovative and effective multi-platform marketing, engagement and profile-raising strategies for Media Trust’s various community and young people’s programmes. This will include highlighting how our programme offering is unique and showcasing our impact and success stories.
You must have the agility to engage with and work equally effectively across our three main stakeholder communities – (i) charities and community organisations (and the trusts and foundations who support them) who we want to participate in our capacity building programmes, (ii) young people particularly from diverse and marginalised backgrounds who are looking to break into the media and (iii) media and creative industry organisations and professionals who we want to engage as volunteers, mentors and sponsors.
You and your team will be responsible for the development and updating of our website, online volunteer & charity matching platform, social media pages, our annual report, overall impact report, regular newsletters, corporate/promotional videos, materials for events and other marketing collateral, testing different approaches to marketing and finding the optimal practices and tools to drive traffic and engagement, and advising and reporting on KPIs and ROI of different marketing initiatives. Where Media Trust doesn’t have the in-house skills or resources in any particular area (e.g. graphic design), you will be proactive and creative about reaching out Media Trust’s industry partners to secure pro bono help and high-quality support to plug the gaps.
A multi-faceted team player, you are as confident leading strategic discussions and developing campaigns as you are writing or editing copy.
Media Engagement and Campaigning
The ideal candidate will have the ability to articulate how our programme work relates to key policy areas like digital inclusion, skills-based volunteering, reframing disability and other mis- or under-represented marginalised communities, strengthening regional and local community voice, and the need for a more diverse and representative media and creative sector. With experience of generating hard news angles and pitching stories, you will secure media interviews and speaking opportunities for Media Trust spokespeople to raise the profile of Media Trust’s work, position Media Trust as a thought-leader, and advocate for policy change. You will also be responsible for establishing and maintaining relationships with key influencers, journalists and policy-makers to raise and strengthen the profile of the organisation. Through initiatives like our new programme to reframe disability in the news, Media Trust is working to enhance the representation of marginalised communities in the media and you will work collaboratively with our partner organisations to lead the strategic campaign for this programme of work.
A Passion for Digital
One of our key strategic priorities is digital communications skills training for the UK charity sector. Building on our successful digital skills capacity building programmes and online Resource Hub launched in 2018, in partnership with leading organisations including Google and Facebook, we will be scaling up our Digital Skills programmes in 2020 focusing on training in regions outside of London. You will be passionate and knowledgeable about digital and experienced embedded and leading digital culture within your work, team and wider organisation. We are looking for someone who believes in the potential and power of digital to enhance and transform third sector organisations and the wider sector to be resilient and transform the way they engage, support and mobilise their stakeholders.
This role is also part of the SMT (Senior Management Team) which means you will actively contribute to setting Media Trust’s overall strategic objectives as well as management of our day to day operations, working alongside your peers on SMT.
You will provide line management to an existing Marcomms team of three managers/executives, working with the team to develop the strategy for the department, support them to manage their workload, prioritise and schedule activities, undertaking appraisals, running regular team meetings and engaging, developing and supporting the team to maximise their potential and nurture a culture of team work, trust, flexibility and accountability. You will be experienced at building internal relationships and working collaboratively across teams and departments on joint projects, effectively managing comms plans and delivering on timelines with multiple stakeholders and partners.
You will oversee the budget for the marketing and communications function and undertake effective financial management including forecasting, monitoring, reviewing and reporting.
What we are looking for in you
- A strategic long-term visionary, with experience of developing and implementing integrated communications strategies across multiple channels (social media, digital, branding and media)
- Significant senior marketing and communications experience, leading the marketing and communications function of an organsiation
- Experience of public affairs, with an understanding of equality and equity issues and designing influencing strategies and events
- Ability to manage suppliers and agencies, ensuring high quality of work, deliverables and value for money
- A passion for digital communications and innovative approach to engaging and mobilising audiences in line with changing digital trends and audience insights
- Outstanding communication skills and ability to adapt tone and approach for different stakeholders
- Ability to craft and edit compelling content to a high standard from policy submissions to tweets
- Demonstrable experience of managing and executing creative and high-impact marketing campaigns and initiatives across multiple platforms and formats, in particular social media
- Good understanding of GDPR and experience of data management and CRM systems
- Team management experience of leading, growing and retaining talent
- Ability to work under pressure, manage multiple projects and meet deadlines
- Confident managing budgets and reporting variances
- A good understanding of analytics and impact measurement methodologies and how to articulate impact at both an individual programme and overall organisational level
- Good understanding of the charity sector. Experience of working within the media and creative industry would also be a plus.
- Experience of working with corporate partners and managing stakeholder relationships at both strategic and project level
