Child Bereavement UK
Child Bereavement UK supports families and educates professionals when a baby or child of any age dies or is dying, or when a child is facing bereavement. Every year they train over 4000 professionals, helping them to better understand and meet the needs of grieving families.
Child bereavement is sadly more common than people think; around 111 children are bereaved of a parent every day (nearly 41,000 p.a.) and one in thirty children will experience a significant bereavement by the time they reach 16.
The charity’s work in the London Borough of Newham, which is funded by City Bridge Trust, provides free, professional bereavement support to families affected by child bereavement. They also work across Newham and Hackney to raise awareness of the impact of child bereavement on families, to make it easier for friends, family and the community to offer support.
Giving charities the chance to tell their stories
Child Bereavement applied to for the Telling Your Stories project; a volunteer film-making scheme which Media Trust runs in partnership with City Bridge Trust for the benefit of their grant recipients.
The project enables ten charities, supported by City Bridge Trust, to have a film made pro-bono by a professional filmmaker who has volunteered their time and expertise.
We paired Child Bereavement with volunteer filmmaker Andy Brooking. Andy has over 15 years experience and has worked with ITV, Sky and A+E Networks.
Raising awareness and providing support at times of need
Child Bereavement UK wanted a film to raise awareness of their Family Support Groups for bereaved parents and children. They also wanted the film to increase the families confidence in attending the groups.
The Groups aim to decrease the families’ sense of isolation and Child Bereavement UK wanted to convey that their Family Support Groups can help children and their families to rebuild their lives after the death of someone important to them.
In addition, the film also needed to communicate their services to a broader audience (supporters, professionals, corporates, volunteers etc.) capturing hearts and minds and encouraging support of and involvement with the charity.
Our volunteer filmmaker, Andy Brooking, rose to the challenge, making Child Bereavement UK a powerful case study-driven short film.

A big impact for a few days volunteering
Child Bereavement UK were delighted with the film Andy created and it is already creating an impact. Jane Keightley, Head of Communications at Child Bereavement UK said: “Two months after the film was launched it had already been watched 3,948 times across Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Instagram, and the numbers are still rising. Jane said: “The film has proved to be a useful resource in promoting our family bereavement services in East London and beyond, helping us to reach more families in need of support. It has been widely shared on social media and used at our open days, training and fundraising events.”
The process of working with Media Trust to make a short, promotional film for Child Bereavement UK was professional from start to finish. Andy was an excellent match for Child Bereavement UK.
