Raising the profile of Local Food Links

Local Food Links is a social enterprise and not-for-profit company that was formed to ‘bring back’ hot school meals to primary schools in West Dorset.

Local Food Links was established in 1999 by the West Dorset Food and Land Trust, a registered charity and local community organisation, to run farmer’s markets and other food initiatives. These initiatives included Bridport food festival, the grow it, cook it, eat it project, cookery workshops and NVQ training in catering for young people.

Suzie King is the Office Manager at Local Food Links and decided to apply for Media Trust’s My Community media and marketing training programme region in partnership with Locality and funded by the Department of Communities and Local Governments (DCLG) to help her raise the profile of Local Food Links work in the media.

This seemed a fantastic learning opportunity that would enable us to improve without too great a time commitment and no cost

Suzie felt the project was a great opportunity to raise Local Food Link’s profile in the media as they had no previous training or experience in media and communications:

“We are a very small team without any formal media training or experience but want to do the best that we can with the limited resources we have. This seemed a fantastic learning opportunity that would enable us to improve without too great a time commitment and no cost”.

The Media and Marketing Training Programme offers community groups the opportunity to be trained in Marketing, PR and social media to help raise their profile in the media and share their impactful stories.

[The programme] increased my confidence in PR and provided me with access to useful new resources

Through the training workshops participants received advice and feedback from our expert trainers to help improve their skills, as well as the opportunity to have a media mentor support them strategically in raising their profile in the media.

Reflecting on the parts of the training workshops that were the most beneficial, Suzie highlighted the “one to one feedback from [the trainer] on our press release and having the dedicated time to think about it in a more strategic and less reactive way, away from the office”.

Suzie says that Media Trust Media and Marketing Programme “increased my confidence in PR and provided me with access to useful new resources”.
