Building the skills and confidence of the Queen’s Young Leaders

Training tomorrow's Young Leaders on how to handle the media.

The Queen’s Young Leaders are an inspirational group of young individuals aged 18-29 from 40 Commonwealth countries. All of which are dedicated to using their skills to improve the lives of others in their communities and beyond.

The award is run by The Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Trust, in partnership with Comic Relief and the Royal Commonwealth Society.

This year, 64 exceptional young people were chosen to receive the award and invited to London for a one week residential programme of training and mentoring. This culminated with a visit to collect their award from Her Majesty The Queen.

Media Trust was invited to kick off the week long programme with a day of intensive media training. The session aimed to build the skills and confidence of the Young Leaders and to raise awareness of their amazing work. Entrusted with such a special project, we turned to our corporate partners to help. We needed expert Media handling knowledge and skills to support the young people, which made award-winning PR agency Weber Shandwick the perfect partner.

It was a privilege to meet and coach remarkable young people who have already made such a positive contribution to their communities and who realise the importance of sharing their experiences with the wider world.

The session started with an introduction to the media and the do’s and don’ts of media interviews. After which, each participant went on to practice both TV and radio interviews.  Guided by Weber Shandwick’s experts and Media Trust’s media trainers, they received 121 coaching, constructive feedback and tips on how to get their message across. The session culminated in a mock press conference. Six of the Young Leaders faced challenging questions from their peers and the trainers to put their learning to the test.

I realised that the interview is not about the journalist, but about you. I have control of the interview at all times. Knowing all of this has given me much more confidence to be interviewed.

It wasn’t just the young award winners who gained something positive from the training. Patrick Harrison, ‎Director of Reputation Management & Strategic Media Relations, reflects: “It was a privilege to meet and coach remarkable young people who have already made such a positive contribution to their communities and who realise the importance of sharing their experiences with the wider world.

“Never before has a generation had such a range of communications channels available to them. Used wisely, these channels can help break down barriers, challenge intolerance, encourage inclusivity and promote active citizenship. As the world confronts multiple challenges to peace and stability, perhaps these Commonwealth young leaders can help point us all towards a better collective future.”

Since the training, a number of the Queen’s Young Leaders have successfully put their training into action. Many have featured on the news since returning to their home countries, and one Young Leader appeared on BBC Radio 4 in August 2016.
