About Media Trust Volunteers
Media Trust’s volunteers are talented and experienced media and communications professionals, who want to share their skills to support your work. Whether a freelance filmmaker or marketing director, our volunteers have a minimum of two year’s industry experience.
We have 25+ years of experience in harnessing the skills and resources of the media and creative industries for social good, with a network of 30+ media industry partners spanning media companies and creative agencies, including BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Sky, Facebook, Google, Twitter, Snap, The Guardian, Bloomberg and BBH to name a few, whose employees volunteer with Media Trust throughout the year.

Find a Media Trust Volunteer
Whether you’re looking for a volunteer to develop a comms plan, web copy or press release for your organisation, you can request help from expert media and creative professionals via Media Trust’s online Volunteer Platform. Follow these three simple steps to get started and start finding a volunteer.
Step 1 – Set up your charity profile
Provide a clear summary of what your charity does, who you work with and the impact you have. This will help volunteers understand what you do and how you make a difference.
Step 2 – Create a Volunteer Opportunity
Outline the specific communications challenge you have, how a volunteer can help, and the impact their help could have on your charity. Volunteer opportunities that are clear and specific about the skills, audiences and outputs required have the most interest and take up from our volunteers. Media Trust will review your opportunity and once approved, post your request on our platform and share it with our volunteer networks.
Step 3 – Connect with your volunteer
If a volunteer thinks they have the communications skills and experience you require, they can apply via the Volunteer Platform. If you feel that their skills are a good match with your charity and they can help, select them as your volunteer. Once they accept the opportunity you will be able to access their contact details via the Volunteer Platform so you can get started.

How to get the most from your volunteer
Our media volunteers are professional, and most will be offering their time in addition to fulfilling a full-time job.
Keeping volunteers motivated and committed can be a challenge. To ensure they provide the support you need and remain productive you will need to maintain clear and regular channels of communication.
Read on to discover our top tips for keeping your volunteers engaged and developing an effective working relationship with them.
- Respond quickly – If you leave a volunteer request too long, they may start thinking about finding another organisation to support. Also, it is YOUR responsibility to get in touch with them. We suggest you contact them immediately while they are still keen to help!
- Volunteer management is key – Be clear on who is going to manage the relationship with your volunteer and see the work through within your organisation. Start by setting up a call with the volunteer to ensure you are on the same page.
- Provide a clear brief – Be clear on what you need and the timeline for the work. Discuss it with your volunteer and agree deadlines together
- Remain open – Our media volunteers are highly skilled and work for some of the biggest media companies in the world. They may come up with creative and imaginative approaches to your situation. Be open to their suggestions and trust their expertise
- Be prepared – Make sure you have the correct information, equipment and resources in place so your volunteer can get to work straight away
- Honesty is king - Be upfront with them about what you do and don’t know. They are the experts and here to help so don’t be afraid to ask questions
- Be realistic – Don’t make promises you can’t deliver on. Tell your volunteer about your workload and the time and resources you can make available to them
- Communicate regularly – Keep in touch and update them with progress, challenges and deadlines
- A simple thank you – Make sure you thank your volunteers and show your appreciation. They are giving up their time to help you and everyone likes a little TLC
