People volunteer their time for a variety of reasons. Some want to share their skills, while others want to give back to a cause that they are passionate about.
However, when your time is stretched and you are trying to juggle work, family, friends and your own health and well-being, it can be difficult to justify giving up your precious time to volunteer.
So what will you get out of volunteering?
Improve your skills and your well-being
Volunteering provides the perfect opportunity for you to learn new skills or brush up on your knowledge. At the same time, you can give something back to a unique sector that is urgently in need of the vital communications skills and expertise you have.
Our research states that 8 out of 10 charities have an annual communications budget of less than £1,000 and many have no budget at all. Imagine if that was all you had to work with on your next campaign?
By volunteering with a charity you have the opportunity to improve that organisation’s communications. You will be able to use your skills to give them a voice. One that is heard loud and clear. In doing so, your knowledge and advice will help them to recruit more volunteers, increase awareness of their cause, raise funds and ultimately ensure that they can carry on the work they do to improve the lives of their beneficiaries.
At the same time, you get to apply your creativity and make a real impact. A great way to develop your CV and portfolio.
We’re a small charity with limited resources. This means we can’t always promote our products or services in the ways that we would like. We know what we should be doing but we don't have the capacity to do it. We need to improve our reach, create more content for social media and develop our video making skills. This is where expert media volunteers are a great help.Bethan Grant, Trust and Foundation Fundraiser, ERIC, The Children's Bowel & Bladder Charity
Give something back
Volunteering is a really valuable way of giving something back. Along the way, you will meet all manor of inspiring people who need your support.
Charities supported by a Media Trust volunteer report positive outcomes including increased media skills, visibility and support. In fact, 91% of long term matches reported to have raised a charity’s profile.
How long do I have to commit for?
We understand that time is often hard to come by in the media and communications industry. That is why, at Media Trust we make it easy for you to volunteer your time and skills with a cause that is right for you.
If you want to get a taste for the challenges faced by our charities, then you can start by attending one of our volunteer networking events. These are a little like speed dating events. You will meet a number of charities and speak to them for a few minutes to understand the nature of their issue. You can offer on the spot advice to their questions or arrange to follow up afterwards to discuss in more detail.
If you want to make a longer term commitment to volunteering, then register your profile on our volunteer platform.
As a volunteer you will provide valuable one-to-one advice, support and guidance to charities. This can be provided in person or via email or phone, whichever works best for you. Depending on the nature of the opportunity, you might work with a charity on a one-off basis or you could develop an on-going relationship over weeks, months or perhaps even years! Our charities greatly appreciate any time you can give.
It is great that the skills I use every day and the expertise gained over many years in the media can be of huge benefit to a charity working on a shoestring budget.Sarah Williams-Robbins, Head of Communications, A+E Networks UK
How do I get involved?
The charities Media Trust works with are looking for help with their marketing, PR, social media, websites, film-making, photography, branding and more. Many charities, especially smaller ones, don’t have the resources or skills to tell the stories of their fantastic work.
Your help will make a real difference!
