Celebrating the partnership between Media Trust and Warner Bros. Discovery Access on Black Britain Unspoken.

Media Trust are thrilled to share that our creative partnership with Warner Bros. Discovery Access (WBD) has been shortlisted for a Third Sector Business Charity Award in the Charity Partnerships – Media and Entertainment category. We’re in great company, up against partnerships between Mind and Netflix, and Prostate Cancer UK and Paddy Power.

Our nomination recognises the impact of our ongoing partnership with WBD and our collaboration on Black Britain Unspokenan initiative championing the voices of new and emerging Black British filmmakers.

This partnership was born from a shared ambition to increase access to the screen industries and shine a light on untold stories. We feel honoured to see our collaboration recognised on such a respected stage.

What is Black Britain Unspoken?

Launched in 2022, Black Britain Unspoken was created in response to the tragic murder of George Floyd in 2020. His death prompted Warner Bros. Discovery’s Employee Business Resource Group, the Multicultural Alliance, to reflect on the barriers facing Black filmmakers and, along with the WBD UK & Ireland Commissioning teams, and Media Trust, to explore how the media industry could become more inclusive and accessible.

The result was a unique programme that gives Black filmmakers and storytellers the platform to create and share powerful, personal stories exploring what it means to be Black and British today.

As part of the programme each year, three filmmakers receive skills training, mentorship, funding and industry support, taking them from pitch to production. Their short films are then premiered at an industry screening event before being released on discovery+ and Warner Bros. Discovery’s digital platforms.

Three seasons, nine directors

Since its launch, Black Britain Unspoken has grown year on year, with hundreds of filmmakers applying to take part. Across three seasons, the nine selected directors have gone on to share their stories with wide audiences, while gaining valuable experience and connections within the industry.

The filmmakers’ work has been recognised at festivals and in the industry, with accolades such as Richard Ampeh’s ‘The Nod: Tell Me You Got Me’ being nominated at the Edinburgh TV Festival New Voices Awards, and Talisha Johnson’s ‘Too Autistic for Black’ which led her to being named as a BAFTA Breakthrough.

So, what’s next?

A huge thank you to the incredible team at Warner Bros. Discovery for your continued collaboration and commitment to supporting different perspectives, backgrounds, and experiences.
