Why should I be a mentor?

Mentors play a crucial part to young people looking to develop a career in the creative industries.

Mentoring is a rewarding experience which can be hugely beneficial to a young person. Your insight and first hand experience of the creative industries can help get them work ready, improve their confidence and bolster their resilience. For someone who is interested in the creative and media industries, but may not have come across the right opportunities, your advice and encouragement could be life changing.

Our Transforming Hidden Talent programme connects 16-25 year olds with volunteer mentors from creative and media organisations across the UK. Through the programme our mentors offer a first hand view of what it’s like to work in the media industry.

Impart your wisdom, knowledge, and skills to a young person.

The search is on for our amazing media mentors.

We are currently looking to recruit 100 mentors for the final year of the programme. We need volunteers from across the creative and media industries to mentor their time and experience. So if you work in web design, marketing, journalism, video games, radio or film production, we want to hear from you! If you work in the finance, legal or HR department of a media organisation you also have lots to offer, so please get in touch.

You do not need to have mentored before, or be a seasoned media professional – we just ask that you have at least two years professional experience in the creative industries.

My mentor was incredibly helpful throughout our mentorship and it is thanks to him that I am now so much more confident.

It’s not just a one-way journey

Mentorships do not only benefit the mentee involved. Mentors  develop skills in leadership, listening and communication, lateral thinking and coaching. It is also an opportunity to see things from new perspectives.

Media Trust will provide you with your initial training at an induction session. This will ensure you know what is expected of you and prepare you for your mentorship.

Your mentorship will not be too time intensive. You will be expected to meet your mentee once a month over a 12-month period. This will be worked out and agreed with you to fit into your schedule.

The joy in being able to show someone their abilities and to enable them to be an asset to a company and start them on a career can not be measured in reward.

Whilst it may seem a hackneyed term, the ability to give something back can not be underestimated in appreciating one’s own worth. Win win in its true sense.
