With growing inequality and shifting political landscapes, it is more important than ever that media and policymakers hear directly from those most affected. That is why Media Trust runs Stronger Voices, a free strategic communications training programme designed for UK equality organisations, grassroots movements and user-led charities in London. The programme equips these experts with the skills needed to amplify their message, engage their audiences and drive meaningful change.
Why TERN Joined the Programme
Mai Brightling, the Communications Lead from The Entrepreneurial Refugee Network (TERN) graduated from Stronger Voices in Spring 2024. TERN is a social enterprise dedicated to empowering refugees through entrepreneurship. As part of its mission, they work to ensure that refugee entrepreneurs’ voices are heard in mainstream media.
At the time of applying to Stronger Voices, TERN had built a highly engaged community of refugee entrepreneurs eager to share their experiences. However, the organisation needed a structured media strategy to effectively position these voices in the public sphere.
Recognising the opportunity, Mai saw the programme as a chance to develop a proactive media engagement strategy – one that would not only enhance TERN’s external communications but also equip its community members with the skills to confidently navigate media opportunities. It was also TERN’s first ever capacity building programme, so they were unsure what to expect!
Unlocking the Media
Taking part in Stronger Voices gave TERN invaluable insights into the media landscape. Mai developed a deeper understanding of what makes a compelling story and how to craft a pitch that resonates with journalists. Direct conversations with senior journalists provided behind-the-scenes knowledge of media processes, demystifying the press and enabling Mai to refine TERN’s approach to storytelling and campaign planning to ensure they stood out.
