Twenty-two-year-old Charly Humphreys from Wandsworth, South London, has been announced as the winner of the fifth annual Vlogstar Challenge competition at Media Trust’s online Grand Final event in partnership with the Jack Petchey Foundation.

Yesterday’s event, which was live streamed on YouTube, saw fifteen finalists’ (above) videos premiered at a showcase hosted by Ria Hebden from the BBC’s Sunday Morning Live.

A panel of judges which included Top boy actor Ashley Walters, comedian Munya Chawawa, LGBTQ+ Advocate & YouTuber Rowan Ellis, Media Trust CEO Su-Mei Thompson, Jack Petchey’s Matt Rantell, previous Vlogstar Challenge winner Bella Roberts and previous finalist Jonas Mondua, crowned Charly as 2020 champion for her video Burnouts, monetising creative outlets and societal pressure. The video shows Charly candidly explore the challenges of finding a healthy balance and a clear state of mind in 2020.

Judge Ashley Walters said of the competition: “It is about creating and pushing talent and giving them information about how to get in the game. It used to be that young people wanted to be pop stars or sports stars, now they want to be YouTubers.

“The winners will get exposure to the industry and be able to elevate themselves to that next level.”

Speaking at last night’s event, Media Trust CEO Su-Mei Thompson said: “A huge congratulations to all of our finalists. We’ve been blown away by the calibre of this year’s entries which provide an incredible insight into the lives, concerns and achievements of young people living in lockdown.”

About the Vlogstar Challenge

Vlogstar Challenge is a unique training programme and competition run by Media Trust in partnership with the Jack Petchey Foundation and supported by YouTube and the Evening Standard. The programme aims to inspire 16-25-year olds London and Essex to express themselves through video.

Charly was one of over 1,500 young people who had received training in shooting and editing videos through our Vlogstar Challenge workshops this year. The face-to-face workshops moved online from March due to Covid-19 restrictions. Each trainee was then invited to submit a video into the competition. The entries were then narrowed down to 15 finalists who competed to be crowned this year’s winner.
