How to show your volunteers appreciation and keep them involved

Volunteers are often at the heart of your charity. Their time, skills and passion can transform programmes and communities, making a real change. But once a campaign ends or a project wraps up, what comes next? It’s easy to move on to the next task, but taking time to properly thank volunteers can make all the difference.

In this guide, we will share ways you can meaningfully thank your volunteers and nurture ongoing relationships that keep them coming back, project after project.

Meaningful ways to show your appreciation

1. Give them a public shoutout

Acknowledge their hard work publicly. This could be a post on your social media channels showcasing what they’ve been doing and the amazing impact they’ve had, or a blog all about their awesome skills.

It not only makes them feel valued but also highlights your charity’s impact and can inspire others to get involved too!

 2. Offer to write them a recommendation

A personalised recommendation can be invaluable for their career, highlighting their skills, dedication and contributions in detail. Offer to provide these recommendations on platforms such as LinkedIn or in formal letters they can use for job applications.

3. Host a volunteer recognition event

Organise events where volunteers can connect with like-minded people, share experiences and build their network. These can be done in different formats, such as exclusive masterclasses for volunteers, breakfasts or roundtables. The events can be hosted in-person or online – whatever suits your community best.

How to keep the relationship going

1. Say thank you

Getting creative when thanking your volunteers can go a long way – it makes them feel appreciated and encouraged to stay connected.

2. Send follow-up updates

Keep volunteers in the loop by sending updates on the outcomes of the project they helped with. Sharing stories, photos or statistics about the difference their time made can reinforce their sense of purpose and keeps them engaged.

3. Invite feedback

Show volunteers that you value their views by asking for feedback on their experience and improve it accordingly. This not only makes them feel heard but also helps improve future projects and volunteer management.

4. Offer learning

Where possible, provide training or development opportunities to take on new volunteer roles. Many volunteers appreciate chances to develop skills or take on greater responsibility, which strengthens their engagement and commitment.

By showing genuine appreciation and continuing to connect with volunteers after a project ends, you’re not just wrapping things up neatly – you’re planting the seeds for future support, loyalty and community!
