Heritage Digital

Find out about how we’re supporting the Heritage Sector’s move to digital

Our heritage defines us. It tells the story of who we are, where we’re from and how we’ve come to be who we are today. It is everywhere we look. In our towns, cities, and villages; in our historic buildings, monuments and landmarks, our beautiful landscapes and parks, in museums and libraries, places of worship and more. Heritage is integral to society.

Heritage Digital is a programme supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund’s Digital Skills for Heritage initiative, which aims to increase free digital skills training and support available to heritage organisations. Media Trust are part of a unique consortium, alongside The Heritage Alliance, Charity Digital, Naomi Korn Associates and Dot Project.

Over the last 14 months through Heritage Digital, we created bespoke training, online guides and resources to up-skill the sector and build digital resilience across four digital topic areas; marketing strategy, communications, rights and privacy and technology. Media Trust led on the digital marketing strategy and digital communications skills training for the project.

We welcomed over 3,000 people to 7 webinars, 10 different online workshops and 3 #HeritageDigitalNow virtual days.

One of the most common questions we’ve had at our events is ‘Will the recording be shared?’, and the answer to that is always yes. We’ve got a wealth of webinar and event recordings on the Heritage Digital events page for you to watch when you want. As well as that, we’ve shared 12 guides covering the topics that you’ve told us that you want to hear about. You can find these in the resources section of the site.

“The (event) was incredibly informative and very well organised. The speakers were excellent and extremely knowledgeable, I felt engaged throughout!”

What’s next for Heritage Digital?

Following the success of the first Heritage Digital project, the Heritage Fund and DCMS has awarded us more funding to bring you the Heritage Digital Academy, a series of unique training sessions which will provide all types of Heritage organisations with the tools they need to make effective use of digital within strategic and operational planning.

Over the next 12 months, heritage organisations will have the opportunity to work with each other and expert trainers in a number of different training cohorts, modules, events, and webinars focusing on the biggest organisational challenges shared with us by the sector.

The free online training covers ‘Making a plan for digital’ and ‘Designing digital services’, both with four modules spanning over the course of eight weeks. By being part of a cohort, you’ll also have access to drop-in sessions with trainers and out-of-module work to ensure your organisation gets the most from the programme.

How can I take part?

Applications for the first cohort are now closed but you can sign up to the mailing list to be notified of when the next cohort applications open.
